Further to my last brief message on this subject, there was a small run a fish over the counter during that mild spell of weather a week or so ago, half a dozen or so of which were captured on the video.
Given high flows and cold water temperatures in the preceding weeks though, i suspect they were late spawning fish from last year’s run that had been ‘held up’ by the conditions, rather than early running spring fish from this year’s.
We’re not quite sure why fish running at this time of the year have more of a tendency to come in at a more oblique angle but this behaviour is probably linked to the generally higher flow conditions and the relatively low water temperatures.
